The Calm Before the Storm

Hey everyone,

This week has been a little strange because, for some reason, I feel like I haven't had much to do! Every class that I'm taking this semester has been relatively calm and not many assignments are due. Then, I looked at the upcoming schedules for the next two weeks before Spring Break...oh man. Therefore, the title of this blog post is quite appropriate.

Dr. Parker posted some interesting sources for us to look at this week, and I found the DOK document to be informative. There are basically 4 levels of knowledge you can use/assess in your classroom: Memorize, Thinking, Strategic Thinking, and New. There are several different tools you can use in each of these categories that are represented in the infographic. I particularly like the fourth stage, where students apply their knowledge to different situations. That way, they understand the material in different contexts. I plan to print this image out and use it as a guide when introducing new topics to my students in my future classroom.

Edutopia (which is currently my favorite website, besides Pinterest) has an article further explaining the Depth of Knowledge strategy: https://www.edutopia.org/blog/webbs-depth-knowledge-increase-rigor-gerald-aungst The article touches on an important point, that this strategy is not developmental. Even Kindergarteners can benefit from the DOK process! Therefore, having an understanding of this process is important for all educators.

The North Carolina Professional Teaching Standard IV says, "Teachers facilitate learning for their students." NCPTS.IV.e further states, "Teachers help students develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills." I believe with the DOK strategy, a teacher can do just this for his/her students. The DOK wheel is all about developing critical thinking, and furthering a deeper understanding of the content materials. So, all in all, if a teacher is implementing this into their classroom, they will be following right along with NCPTS IV!

I hope you all enjoy the lovely weather this weekend,

Gabrielle

  1. I couldn't agree more that this is the calm before the storm! The most important thing is to stay focused and on task. I love the website that you included because Edutopia is such a great resource for teachers. I know I have found many ideas that I have used in my education classes. I like your idea about printing out the DOK document and using it in your future classroom. I think it would be a great way to guide students in their learning.

  2. Gabrielle, "The calm before the storm" is extremely appropriate for your blog post this week. We can all get through this if we stick together and stay focused! Edutopia seems to be everyone's favorite website and I think it is very helpful as well! The DOK process is very beneficial to students learning and I like the idea of printing it off as well to use it in my future classroom and lesson plans I am writing now.

  3. Gabrielle, I totally agree with you on your blog post, it was like a little tease for us because we do have a lot of work to do before spring break. Both of our lesson plans are due so we really need to start focusing on them. I also found the DOK document to be very helpful and it provided great strategies for us to use in our future classroom. Edutopia is also a great website and has great strategies to help students become critical-thinkers and problem-solvers which is our goal for the students.

  4. Gabrielle,
Yes! DOK is a powerful framework for your future classroom! Continue to build your foundational knowledge about DOK so you can be prepared to design instruction that really requires your students to think critically instead of just going through the motions.
