An edTPA-Focused Spring Break

Hey guys,

Well, we made it to Spring Break, thank goodness! This semester is really flying by (though I feel like I say that about every semester). I'm feeling quite overwhelmed at the moment, because of all of the assignments and projects I need to complete in the next several weeks. I am the kind of person who struggles with living in the moment, but rather constantly looks forward to (or dreads) what is happening in the future. So, even though our Flipped Lesson got postponed and I'm overjoyed with the decision, I am still stressed about what's to come. Hopefully over break, I can get ahead!

I don't think I am the only person thinking this when I say that edTPA scares me to death. The more we talk about it, the more panicky and incomprehensive I feel on the process. So, I've tried looking up videos and sources that further explain the system. Here is an article with some tips on succeeding in edTPA that will be beneficial for us now, but more specifically with Student Teaching:

Also, here is a 4 minute overview video on edTPa that provides some more key tips!

In class this morning, Dr. Wesson compared edTPA to a "mini" National Boards. By becoming proficient in edTPA, whenever I aim to achieve my National Boards, I will understand the process better. edTPA allows us, as future teachers, to reflect on our practice and become better teachers, not only by thinking thoroughly through the planning and execution of lessons, but also by assessing our students and methods. Because edTPA is includes many different aspects, I feel that it encompasses all 5 NCPTS! However, because assessment is heavily emphasized in this system, NCPTS V is strongly addressed. Points A and B of NCPTS V highlight assessing student learning and linking professional growth to professional goals. This proves that edTPA is not only beneficial for the students, but also for us!

Take heart, we will get through this together! Have a great Spring Break.

Gabrielle

  1. Like you, edTPA feels so overwhelming for me! I'm thankful that Dr. Parker gave us extra time to really study and familiarize ourselves with edTPA. The video that you included was really helpful. It simplified everything to make understanding a lot easier. I hope you have a great spring break and finish strong through the rest of the semester!

  2. Gabrielle,
Thank you for sharing this video. I, too, have felt overwhelmed this week by edTPA and all the other things needing my attention. I feel as if edTPA is very complicated, and something that I have never had to experience before. I have heard that trials make you stronger, so hopefully we will come out better from this.
Have a wonderful spring break, Gabby!

  3. Gabrielle - it is important to remember that edTPA is just good teaching and learning...it is just a very thorough process of documentation. Keep on building your foundational knowledge!
