Last Weekly Blog!

Hi everyone,

We made it to our last regular blog of the semester! It is absolutely mind-blowing how quickly the past four months flew by. Now, if only I can make it through the next 2.5-3 weeks. I've mentioned this before, but this semester greatly tested the boundaries of my procrastination attributes. Slowly, but surely, I am becoming better in this area.

Monday and Tuesday were strange days for me. I kept feeling like I should be at Washington and that I was missing out on something. I honestly have missed those kids this week, so next Tuesday, having to say goodbye, will be difficult. The partnership GWU made with Washington has been one of the most beneficial experiences for us. I've gotten to witness these kids growing and learning every week. It's emotional to watch and encouraging to see how much of a difference adults make in their lives.

We've all been working mercilessly on our Units this week, and I am nearing mental-death (if that's a thing). If I ever end up teaching 5th grade, you can bet I'll be utilizing this in my classroom. The unit has also taught me how to connect standards and activities to one another. I feel that I've grown in this area of connecting topics to concepts, which will definitely be a skill used in my future classroom.

Mallory, Michaela, and I decided on our App Evaluation project for April, and (spoiler alert) we chose "Social Studies Friendzy." This app can be beneficial in your classroom, because it not only touches on the 5 strands of S.S., but also other content areas. It also allows students to connect to others around the world. I hope you all enjoy our presentation later this month, when we submit it. Using outside resources, like Social Studies Frenzy helps facilitate learning, relating to NCPTS 4: "Teachers facilitate learning for their students."

This has really been an eye-opening, challenging, exhausting, and liberating semester for me. I cannot imagine how the next and final 2 semesters of my college career will be like, but I'm pretty excited (terrified).

Have a great weekend,

Gabrielle

  1. Leaving our students at Washington will definitely be a difficult experience for us next week! I know I have really enjoyed watching my first graders grow and learn each week. The app that you mentioned sounds really neat and that it could be very helpful to us in class. Good luck with your unit as the semester comes to an end!

  2. Gabrielle, it is going to be so sad to leave our kids at Washington! Just when they were beginning to tell us apart! (In their defense Lowman and Lindley both start with L's) I couldn't agree more that this semester has been the most challenging and exhausting semester yet! I suppose that we are just thickening our skin and preparing our time management skills for what's to come! (student teaching)
