Hello, Flipped Classroom Certification!

Hi Everyone,

First off, I just want to say how crazy it is that I received an email today notifying me that it's time to meet with advisors for registration. This semester is flying by!! This is the last time I will be registering for classes. Next semester, I'll be registering for Student Teaching, and oh my I'm so nervous. It feels like it's already here, while at the same time I feel like I left 250 yesterday. What a journey this has been, indeed!

Anyways, I can now say that I am Flipped Classroom certified. I really enjoyed the process of watching videos on flipped classrooms and creating a lesson of my own. I believe this is beneficial tool to be used in my future classroom. Though the age-appropriate level will need to be adjusted if I am working in younger grades, I still feel like this can be utilized to further my students' educations. Flipped classrooms work well, because students get a better hands-on experience. They learn the "lecture" material at home or on their own time, and then can come back the next day and ask questions, work on problems or projects, and apply that knowledge. While watching the videos, it made complete sense to me, though I had never thought about the problems of traditional classrooms. Students who struggle or did not comprehend the material cannot fully complete homework or outside-the-class work, because they don't remember, or didn't understand the material in the first place. With this new method, students watch or read the material at home and can address their questions inside the classroom, the next day. This system is fantastic! I cannot wait to use this in my future classroom!

http://www.flippedclassroomworkshop.com/8-great-free-flipped-teaching-resources/ includes additional resources to use when creating a flipped classroom. Some of these sources were addressed in the tutorials on sophia.org, but some were not and I believe will be beneficial. This video below also provides a further explanation of what a flipped classroom looks like. I loved the animations and how the speaker presents this concept in a different way.

I believe flipped classrooms are all about differentiation and NCPTS II, part d: "Teachers establish a respectful environment for a diverse population of students; Teachers adapt their teaching for the benefit of students with special needs." Whenever you create a flipped classroom, students with specific needs can be attended to better. Your class time isn't consumed by lecturing material, but rather focusing on problems and questions. The teacher can target the individual needs of students whenever a flipped classroom is established, and so because of this, I plan to adapt my methodologies to a flipped classroom-friendly environment.

I hope you all have a wonderful week and enjoy some relaxation time.

Gabrielle

  1. Gabrielle, it is absolutely crazy that so very soon we will be registering for our last semester of on campus classes! And then... Student Teaching!!! I agree that the flipped classroom is a great opportunity to create an in class environment where students feel comfortable discussing what they maybe didn't quite get through the flipped lesson. Rather than students going home and being puzzled about the information they didn't grasp, they can ask for the teacher's assistance in the classroom! I love the idea of a flipped classroom because it gives us the opportunity to assist students with exactly what they need during class time!

  2. Gabrielle, I cannot believe that we are about to register for our last semester of classes already! That is so crazy and these past years have flown by! I am also really nervous for student teaching but at the end of this semester and next semester we should be very prepared to student teach! I also love the idea of a flipped classroom. This was the first time I have heard of a flipped classroom, I had no idea such thing existed. I think that it will help you work with your students and be more productive in class. Instead of giving them homework they may or may not understand, we can just have them watch a 5-10 minute video for homework instead!

  3. Gabrielle, I agree it feels like we were just in 250 yesterday and now we a semester away from registering for student teaching! I love the idea of the flipped classroom! Like you said, it just makes sense because student will have us as a resource when they are applying their knowledge. Students often take homework home and become lost and frustrated, the flipped classroom is the perfect way to combat that. I'm so glad we had the opportunity to become certified in this area!
